Weight Loss and Wellness Program

North Shore Sleep Medicine would like to introduce our new Nutritionist/ Life Style Educator, Michael Flynn, BCCL, FLT, LE.

 

Under the direction of Dr. Lisa Shives, Michael is heading up our new weight loss and wellness program entitled FirstLine Therapy (FLT). Many patients have started the program and are already dropping those unwanted pounds and are on the way to optimal health! (See Michael's bio for more info.)

FLT is a lifestyle program that uses nutrition, exercise and stress management to improve your health and assist in reversing chronic diseases such as overweight, obesity, diabetes, metabolic syndrome, cardiovascular disease and inflammatory disease states. The program is backed by medical research, and is clinically tested and shown to reduce FAT instead of losing lean muscle.

 

FirstLine therapy addresses the underlying causes of your health concerns. The FLT plan follows a low-glycemic load food plan, known as a modified Mediterranean diet, which is consistent with the most current research for reversing chronic disease. This plan is not intended to be a disciplined or laboring experience; this is all about Life Style Change. Your transformation will be fun and educational getting all the proper tools to implement your new life style change!

Fundamentals of the FirstLine therapy Program

  • Knowledge
    A healthy lifestyle starts with the knowledge to make informed decisions that impact your health everyday.
  • Balanced Eating
    Balanced eating habits have a direct influence on excess insulin production, body composition and disease prevention. We will assist you in meal planning for life.
  • Regular Activity/Exercise
    A regular program of aerobic, strength training and flexibility exercises has been shown to reverse insulin resistance, increase vitality, and reduce the risk of disease.
  • Appropriate Nutritional Supplementation
    Incorporating a foundational nutrition program with targeted nutrients that help to prevent and/or treat specific conditions is an essential part of a therapeutic lifestyle program.

The program also features these key components:

  • BIA
    First, we will perform a BIA or Body Impedance Analysis. This step will give us a baseline showing your current fat mass, muscle mass, intra- and extra-cellular waters, as well as other important cellular markers. From this we can interpret your current metabolic condition. This test will be repeated as necessary to reveal how your body is changing through out your program, allowing our practitioners to modify your individual plan as necessary.
  • Blood Chemistry
    Checking for the chemical markers that could affect your health and ability to lose fat.
  • Medical Review
    This will include looking at your current medications, as certain medications can inhibit weight loss or contribute to weight gain. We will also look at your supplements such as vitamins and herbs, as to make sure you are taking the right types for the right reasons. This will include looking at the quality, clarity (decontamination process), and proper ratios.
  • Sleep Test
    A sleep test may be ordered by your physician. Proper sleep is critical to the ability to lose weight.
  • Measurements
    Measurements will be taken as needed to track progress.
  • Tracking Progress
    We will supply you with the tools that are needed to track your progress through out your plan.
  • Management of Medications
    As you are reversing out of your disease states, we will need to reduce or ultimately eliminate your medications.
  • Stress Management
    Including relaxation techniques such as proper breathing, proper sleep tips, exercise, developing leisure activities and maintaining a positive attitude.
